SINGLE MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP 2018

Entries are invited for the 2018 Handicap Matchplay Championship. Defending champion Ken Bradley will again be looking to make a bold showing but he will be challenged not only by last year’s finalist Ron Hewson but by many of our experienced match players who are keen to make an impression in this year’s comp.

If you are a new member to the club feel free to enter as the championship is played under handicap conditions. It is a great way to meet other members and perhaps get a feel for representative Pennant play.

Entry fee is $10 payable before your first match.  Entries close on May 31. The Championship is to be conducted from June -September.

Players will remain on the same GA handicaps as they started their first match except if they reduce their handicaps during the course of the competition in which case they shall play off that reduced handicap for the remainder of the competition.

All matches will be played with the benefit of full handicap difference using the balanced handicap distribution method.

Time limits are to be strictly observed. Do not enter if you will be absent during the tournament period.

The entry sheet can be found in the golf shop.

New Course Record Recorded

Congratulations go to Steve Rippon who recorded a new course record of 61 off the stick. This beats his old record by one. This also is the 30th time he has beaten his age.

Course record recorded but no monthly medal as his nett score was 63, finishing third!

Hole of the Week

Known as ‘MINNAMURRA” due to its proximity to the river, lies the 12th hole, our only par 5. It is not long as modern par 5’s go at 460 metres but it is none-the-less quite a challenging hole.

The tee shot features “that” tree which guards the right 2/3 of the fairway. A left-to-right tee shot is required or you will be chipping out of the trees on the left. Overdo the left-to-right and you will be re-loading with your ball flowing down the river. Hit the tree and you are in the hands of the golfing gods. You might get lucky and be able to play your second from the fairway, or more likely, you will probably be searching for it in the river.

Overcome the tee shot and the second shot is relatively easy. Get it up as close to the mounds on the left as possible. The river is on the right awaiting that mis-hit and trees await on the left for those who fear the river. The third shot is played to a very small green with some very tricky pin placements possible.

Overall most are happy for a nett par on this hole.

This Week’s Results

Blue skies provided the backdrop to all the competitions played this week. The week featured the first two rounds of the Ladies Club Championships with the title well and truly up for grabs in all three divisions.

In round 1, Marilyn Wright fired a very impressive 89 off the stick to lead A Division by 4 from Judi O’Brien, 5 from Kay Brennan, 8 from Jenelle Anderson and 10 from Dell Brand, Lyn Kuskey and defending champion Marie Farrant. In B division, Pam Middlebrook leads with 107, Suzanne Lang second on 108. Cheryl Legge and Robyn Gregson are on 110. Lorraine Cram leads C division on 117. Marilyn leads the A grade nett with 73, 4 ahead of 5 others. In B division Lisa Bell leads with 80, one less than 3 others. In C grade Lorraine again leads. As you can see it is very close.

In round 2, Marilyn did not play and that leaves Jenelle Anderson in the lead on 191 after her 94. It is very tight at the top though with Judi O’Brien 1 shot back and Kay Brennan 2 shots adrift. Marie Tarrant and Dell Brand are also within 6 of the lead. Jenelle leads the nett with 151 two ahead of Dell Brand and 4 ahead of Shirley Walsh. In B division Cheryl Legge has opened up a sizeable gap after her second round 103 leaves her on 213, 7 clear of second place Suzanne Lang and Pam Middlebrook. The nett is much closer with Lisa trailing Cheryl by 6. C Division sees Sue Paul in the lead on 236 with Dulcie Piper next on 258. Sue also leads the nett. We eagerly await to see who will handle the pressure and emerge as the new club champions.

Wednesday saw the playing of the Drummond Golf stableford and John Anthony was victorious with a great score of 43 points, 1 better than Ray Orr  and two better than Jeff O’Brien.

Saturday saw the playing of the Golf Mart monthly medals. Medalists were Scott Hainsworth, aka the ‘golden cowpat’ with 62 in A grade, Geoff Wilson with a 64 in B grade, Gary Hemus with a 64 in C Grade and Geoff King with a 66 in D grade. Best scratch was 61 by Steve Rippon. Louise Stoddart won the ladies event.

  1. CONGRATULATIONS STEVE on a fantastic round of golf. Well done mate. Beat your age again. Hope I am still playing at 95 because that’s my only chance…
